Over 1,200 inpatient orthopaedic operative cases are undertaken annually. The 21 storey, $400 million Peter Gilgan Centre for Research and Learning is the home for more than 2,000 SickKids Scientists, trainees and child health research staff.

Breadth of Operative Case Load

 

The breadth and volume of surgical education in paediatric orthopaedics for clinical fellows at The Hospital for Sick Children is unparalleled. This exposure is attributable to a catchment population of eight million combined with a faculty of ten orthopaedic surgeons with both general and subspecialty expertise. Faculty are committed to an educational mandate; it is a priority that fellows actively operate and expand their surgical skills.

 
 

TRAUMA
Single level reconstruction, complex polytrauma, SCFE.

HIP
Open and closed reduction, Salter Innominate osteotomy, periacetabular osteotomies, Wedge pelvic & femoral osteotomies, Wagner double osteotomy, articulated hip distraction, surgical hip dislocation, SUPERhip procedure.

SPINE
Congenital and idiopathic spine deformity correction, anterior and posterior surgery, direct vertebral derotation, VEPTR, complex osteotomy and instrumentation.

LIMB RECONSTRUCTION
Limb lengthening, circular hexapod frame application, monolateral frame application, motorised intramedullary nails, unifocal and multifocal osteotomies, super-joint procedures, Blount’s reconstruction, hemiplateau elevation, pelvic support osteotomy.

NEUROMUSCULAR
Cerebral palsy soft tissue management, osteotomies, single event multi-level surgery.

TUMOUR
Benign and malignant tumour resection, limb salvage, biological and endoprosthetic reconstruction, muscle flaps, rotationplasty.

FOOT & ANKLE
Hindfoot osteotomies, midfoot osteotomies, forefoot osteotomies, resection of coalition, arthrodesis, ankle arthroscopy.

INFECTION
Irrigation and debridement, arthrotomy.

UPPER LIMB
Brachial plexus palsy sequelae reconstruction, glenoid osteotomy, tendon transfers, MHE wrist reconstruction.

GENETIC AND METABOLIC
OI osteotomy and telescopic rodding, skeletal dysplasia reconstruction, rickets reconstruction.

 

Outpatient Clinics & Outreach

 

In addition to daily surgeon-specific clinics, SickKids orthopaedic clinics also include the following:

 
 

DDH Clinic is held weekly in collaboration with a physiotherapist practitioner. The fellow performs a comprehensive assessment on all infants in the clinic, and will learn to effectively use the Pavlik harness and fixed abduction brace according to the SickKids protocols. All infants are included in the International Hip Dysplasia Registry for ongoing collaborative research.

Limb Reconstruction Clinic for planning and monitoring complex deformity correction and limb lengthening using state of the art methods of internal and external fixation.

Complex Spine Clinic occurs once a month under the direction of orthopaedics and neurosurgery.

Bone Health Clinic is a weekly multidisciplinary clinic that runs with participation from orthopaedics, endocrinology and clinical genetics, with a focus on genetic and metabolic bone diseases.

Musculoskeletal Tumour Clinic runs every week with orthopaedics, medical oncology, physiotherapy and plastic surgery.

Combined Brachial Plexus Palsy Clinic runs once a month with plastic surgery and orthopaedics.

Clubfoot Clinic for cast treatment using the Ponseti method runs weekly with collaboration between the orthopaedic surgeons and a specialty-trained advanced practice physiotherapist.

Fracture Clinic is run by a specialty-trained nurse practitioner supported by residents and fellows four times a week. This clinic is supervised by the orthopaedic staff surgeons.

Scoliosis Clinic for non-operative management of spine deformity is run by a specialty-trained physiotherapist practitioner.
